Viral video of Lake Victoria ship launch is fake — footage traces back to shipyard in India

A video that spread widely on social media claiming to show Kenya's government launching a new vessel on Lake Victoria has been exposed as false. Fact-checkers traced the clip to a ship launch ceremony held at a shipyard in India months before the alleged Kenyan event, and found the vessel has no ties to Kenya whatsoever.

According to a Facebook post published on June 29, 2026, President William Ruto had "officially launched" a vessel called the MV NGEGE into Lake Victoria, describing it as a milestone in efforts to revive affordable water transport. The word "Rais," used in the post, means president in Swahili. The accompanying clip showed crowds cheering as a large ship slid into the water, which viewers were led to believe was Africa's largest freshwater lake, shared by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.

The post further claimed the vessel had been built by Kenya Shipyards Limited under a government programme intended to enhance connectivity, promote trade, assist fishing communities and ease pressure on roads around the lake region.

The fabricated story gained traction partly because it echoed genuine developments. In late March 2026, during a trip to Siaya County, Ruto announced a 9.5 billion shilling investment package — roughly $73.3 million — aimed at strengthening the blue economy along Lake Victoria. He also broke ground on the Usenge Pier in Bondo constituency, a Ksh1 billion (about $7.7 million) project by Kenya Shipyards Limited designed to improve boat transport between Kisumu and Homa Bay counties.

That broader package, which the president detailed on his official Facebook page, includes the finished Homa Bay pier, another pier under construction at Muhuru Bay in Migori County, ten fish landing sites spread across five counties from Busia to Migori, a Ksh250 million fishermen's rescue centre in Siaya, and Ksh70 million allocations apiece for rescue boats and fish cages. Notably absent from any of these announcements, however, was any mention of a new ship being launched.

AFP Fact Check found no record of the Kenyan government, the Kenya Ports Authority or Kenya Shipyards Limited ever announcing a vessel named MV Ngege. A review of Kenyan media coverage around the time the claim surfaced likewise turned up no reporting on such a launch. And on the very day the post claimed the ceremony occurred in Kisumu, Ruto was actually in Nairobi presiding over the completion of the Ksh3.8 billion (about $29.3 million), 820-metre Ngong Road-Naivasha Road Flyover.

Investigators eventually located the true origin of the footage: a video dated April 30, 2026 titled "Launching ceremony of C 312 Hansa Anholt," filmed at Kudroli Bengre in the Thannirubhavi area of Mangaluru, a coastal city in India's southwestern Karnataka state. The original recording runs more than 100 minutes long.

Details from that video's description identify the vessel as an 8,500 deadweight-tonne diesel-electric, ice class 1B multi-purpose dry cargo ship built for Leonhardt & Blumberg, a German ship management company — not any East African entity.

A side-by-side comparison of screenshots from the two videos confirmed the ships were one and the same. Distinctive features, including a yellow crane and a floodlight tower visible in both clips, matched exactly, sealing the conclusion that the viral post repurposed unrelated Indian footage.

The case underscores how authentic infrastructure announcements can be twisted into convincing misinformation, and officials have made no indication that any vessel named MV Ngege exists or is planned for Kenya's portion of the lake.
