Venezuelan Leader Maduro Posts First Images from US Detention Amidst Historic Oil Deal

Nicolas Maduro, former President of Venezuela, has shared the first photographs of himself from US detention, where he has been held since his abduction in January. The images, posted on his social media platforms, show Maduro wearing a grey tracksuit and making peace signs with his hands. He has lost considerable weight since his capture, the pictures indicate.

Maduro was abducted along with his wife, Cilia Flores, by US special forces from Caracas, the Venezuelan capital, and transported to the United States. Both are currently being held in a facility in Brooklyn, New York, on charges of drug trafficking and firearm possession, which they have denied.

The photos were uploaded on Sunday, but their timestamp suggests they were taken on June 25, the day following a devastating pair of earthquakes in northern Venezuela that claimed over 6,500 lives and caused widespread destruction. The posts, Maduro wrote, are "a small gift to all my grandchildren, to the boys and girls, and to all the good people who love us."

"I want you to know that we are standing firm, with our hearts full of your love," Maduro continued in the post. "We will remain strong, calm and confident: God is with us. God will provide. Venezuela will rise again."

The AFP news agency tried to confirm the authenticity of the photos with the detention centre but did not receive an immediate response. Maduro, who is not allowed access to newspapers or the internet in prison, is permitted to speak by phone with his family and lawyers for about 300 minutes per month, with each call limited to 15 minutes.

The timing of the release of the photos is particularly significant, coming as it does two days after Maduro's successor, interim President Delcy Rodriguez, announced a "historic" oil agreement with the US. The deal allows American companies to operate oil fields in Venezuela.

The trial for Maduro and his wife is scheduled to begin on June 1, 2027, as announced by a federal court in New York in late July. The former Venezuelan President has faced international scrutiny and legal action since his tenure ended, with numerous allegations of corruption and human rights abuses.

In his posts, Maduro maintains a resilient spirit, emphasizing his faith and the support of the Venezuelan people. "I am sending these photos as a small gift to all my grandchildren, to the boys and girls, and to all the good people who love us," he wrote, demonstrating his ability to remain connected with his constituents despite his circumstances.

The incident has sparked a global debate on the rights of political prisoners and the role of the United States in international politics. Critics of the Maduro regime have long called for his removal from power, viewing him as a symbol of corruption and tyranny. Meanwhile, supporters argue that his detention is a politically motivated move aimed at destabilizing the Venezuelan government.

As Maduro faces his legal battles and detention in the United States, his message of resilience and unity resonates with many in Venezuela and beyond. The photographs, a stark reminder of his current situation, serve as a testament to his enduring presence in the hearts and minds of the Venezuelan people.
