Turning Point USA Expands School Footprint as Young Voter Support for Donald Trump Erodes

Marking the passage of one year since the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, his youth-focused political organization, Turning Point USA, is reporting unprecedented chapter growth across academic institutions nationwide. However, this expanding organizational footprint stands in sharp contrast to a measurable erosion of political support for President Donald Trump and the broader Republican Party among younger demographics.

According to data released by Turning Point USA, the organization's reach has expanded dramatically across both secondary and post-secondary educational environments over the past twelve months. The group now claims more than 3,500 active high school chapters, reflecting an increase of 180 percent since Kirk’s death. Concurrently, its presence across higher education institutions has expanded to exceed 1,500 college chapters, representing a rise of more than 60 percent.

This rapid institutional mobilization follows the high-profile assassination of Kirk on September 10, 2025. The prominent conservative figure, who co-founded Turning Point USA and served as a close political ally to Trump, was shot while speaking to students during an on-campus debate at Utah Valley University. The entire fatal encounter was captured on video, triggering widespread reverberations across the American political landscape.

In the aftermath of Kirk’s death, the Trump administration utilized the shooting to initiate aggressive policy actions aimed at what it characterized as domestic extremist factions. Specifically, federal authorities launched a coordinated crackdown targeting organizations labeled as domestic terrorist threats, explicitly focusing federal scrutiny and enforcement efforts on the decentralized antifascist movement known as Antifa.

Throughout his career, Kirk served as a pivotal organizer within the conservative ecosystem, building Turning Point USA into a vital infrastructure asset dedicated to turning out younger voters for the Republican Party. Yet, as the group marks the first anniversary of his death, the party finds itself navigating deep-seated dissatisfaction among the very youth demographic that Kirk worked to bring into the conservative coalition.

Polling data suggests that young men, who recently served as a crucial source of political momentum for the administration, are increasingly turning away from Trump. A joint survey conducted by the news agency Reuters and the research firm Ipsos revealed that approval for Trump’s performance among men between the ages of 18 and 29 fell to 32 percent in August, representing a steep drop from the 43 percent approval measured in February 2025.

This decline marks a significant reversal from the gains achieved during the previous presidential campaign. According to data compiled by the Pew Research Center, Trump captured 46 percent of the young male vote during the 2024 general election, which had represented a notable seven-percentage-point increase compared to his standing with that group in the 2020 election.

A major driver behind this cooling voter sentiment is persistent economic anxiety among young adults. Cost-of-living pressures have emerged as a primary grievance, as reflected in findings from a Harvard Youth Poll conducted between March and April. In that survey, fully half of respondents aged 18 to 29 indicated that inflation was continuing to affect their daily lives "a lot."

The Harvard study also highlighted broader financial instability facing the emerging electorate, finding that 45 percent of young Americans reported struggling to make ends meet or having very little financial security. These economic strains have severely complicated Republican efforts to maintain political enthusiasm among students and early-career workers.

These domestic economic concerns have been exacerbated by foreign military engagements, most notably the ongoing US and Israeli military campaign against Iran. Analysis from the economic research firm Moody’s Analytics indicates that the conflict has added a direct financial burden on consumers, translating to an average increase of $750 in household expenses across the United States.

The conflict in the Middle East has met with substantial skepticism from young citizens across the country. According to survey data from YouGov and The Economist, only 16 percent of young people reported believing that the decision to pursue US military action in Iran was correct, illustrating a substantial gap between foreign policy decisions and youth perspectives.

These geopolitical tensions have also caused internal friction within conservative ranks. Contentious debates regarding the scale of American military support for Israel and the ongoing hostilities involving Iran have increasingly spilled into Turning Point USA's own internal discussions and campus chapters.

Despite these political challenges and internal policy divides, Republican officials view Turning Point USA's expanding campus network as an essential operational apparatus. With the critical November 3 congressional midterm elections fast approaching, party strategists hope the group's institutional machinery can help mitigate demographic losses and encourage conservative turnout among the youth electorate.

To commemorate the anniversary of the assassination, Turning Point USA organized a memorial gathering on Thursday at Utah Valley University, returning to the campus debate setting where Kirk was fatally shot. The organization is also paying tribute to its late co-founder at the Republican Party’s inaugural midterm convention taking place in Dallas, Texas.
