Turkish Police Detain Dozens in Sweeping Multi-City Raids on LGBTQ Groups

Turkish law enforcement agencies have launched a massive, coordinated security operation targeting LGBTQ rights organizations, community venues, and advocates across multiple major urban centers. The nationwide crackdown marks a sharp intensification of the state's prolonged campaign against sexual and gender minorities, resulting in the detention of dozens of individuals and the opening of extensive legal investigations against community groups.

The coordinated police sweeps unfolded across Turkey's major population centers, including the commercial hub of Istanbul, the capital city of Ankara, the western coastal city of Izmir, and the southern port city of Mersin. Beginning on Sunday, security forces entered and searched gay bars, private residences belonging to prominent activists, and the official headquarters of civil society organizations operating within these metropolitan areas.

According to reporting by the state-run Anadolu news agency, which cited statements released by public prosecutors in Ankara, Istanbul, and Izmir, law enforcement personnel have detained at least 63 individuals as part of the initial wave of operations. Judicial authorities have escalated enforcement actions across these jurisdictions, targeting both organized community initiatives and individual activists.

Turkish Justice Minister Akin Gurlek confirmed the expansive scope of the state's ongoing legal measures in a detailed public statement shared on social media. Gurlek announced that prosecutors have formally opened a comprehensive investigation encompassing 162 individual suspects, along with nine non-governmental associations and 13 commercial enterprises affiliated with the targeted community.

The multi-city police actions were carried out under the state-designated operational title of "My Family is Safe." According to the justice minister, the primary official rationale behind the sweeping law enforcement initiative is to uphold public order, safeguard the welfare of young people, and protect the foundational institution of the traditional family from perceived societal threats.

State officials directly linked Sunday's raids to broader domestic policy goals established by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Minister Gurlek explained that the "My Family is Safe" operations were executed in accordance with Erdogan’s 10-year executive order titled the "Decade of Family and Population," a major governmental policy framework created to confront and reverse Turkey's declining birthrate.

In his social media post on X, Gurlek invoked legal mandates to justify the broad security crackdown, emphasizing that the state has an unavoidable constitutional obligation to protect youth and traditional household structures. The justice minister asserted that the government will maintain zero tolerance toward any alleged illegal activities, abuse networks, or criminal organizations that authorities view as targeting Turkish families or youth.

The physical raids on community offices and private homes followed administrative and digital censorship measures previously imposed by the state. Days before police mobilized on the ground, telecommunications and judicial authorities moved to systematically block public access to the websites of several prominent LGBTQ rights networks and public health groups specializing in HIV awareness.

The coordinated operations specifically focused on both current and former members of these sexual health and civil rights collectives. Among the primary targets of the police action was Kaos GL, one of the country's oldest and most prominent LGBTQ rights organizations, whose administrative offices were subjected to police searches while several associated activists were placed into custody for formal questioning.

Judicial authorities based in the capital of Ankara brought explicit allegations against Kaos GL to justify the searches and legal proceedings. Prosecutors accused the advocacy organization of sharing online publications that allegedly contained obscenity, further arguing that the published material was readily accessible to children on public digital platforms.

Kaos GL released a statement detailing the severe operational and personal impact of the state's actions on the advocacy community. The organization reported that nearly 50 human rights defenders committed to protecting LGBTQ rights have either been taken into formal custody by police or made subject to active judicial proceedings involving legal interrogations and detentions.

Civil society monitors and rights activists pointed out that Sunday’s mass detentions represent a severe escalation in the government's decade-long pattern of hostility toward the LGBTQ community. Over recent years, authorities have steadily hardened their official rhetoric while implementing strict public prohibitions, including repeatedly banning the annual Istanbul Pride march for five consecutive years.

The extensive security measures have provoked sharp condemnation from domestic human rights watchdogs monitoring state actions. The Turkish Human Rights Association published a statement on X condemning the government's official framing, arguing that the real essence of the operation is not family protection, but rather state-led discrimination, the deployment of fear-based politics, and a calculated effort to dismantle independent civil society.

The widespread raids and detentions have also drawn swift international scrutiny from European institutions overseeing fundamental rights and democratic standards. Nacho Sanchez Amor, the European Parliament’s standing rapporteur on Turkey, issued a strong rebuke of the government's actions, characterizing the mass detentions as a shocking and dangerous escalation in state-sponsored repression against civil liberties.
