Nord Stream Blast: How Ukraine's Sabotage of Pipeline Has Strained Ties with Germany

The 2022 destruction of the Nord Stream pipelines, a $19 billion project, has become a symbol of the failure of Berlin’s policy of softening Moscow’s hardline leadership through economic ties. The explosion, which created a massive release of methane and halted pipeline flows, has not only exposed the risks of Germany’s reliance on Russian gas but has also strained Ukraine’s relationship with its neighbor.

The Nord Stream pipelines, which transported natural gas from Russia’s Yamal Peninsula to Germany’s Baltic region, were seen as a testament to Berlin’s strategy of "change through trade." However, on September 26, 2022, a series of underwater blasts transformed the pipeline into a historical tragedy. Dubbed an act of sabotage, the incident has captured the attention of Hollywood, with director Doug Liman and actors Sean Penn and Adrien Brody involved in a drama set in the wake of the attack.

Among the accused is Volodymyr Zhuravlev, a 46-year-old father of three with extensive free-diving experience. He was a consultant on Liman’s film set in Croatia and was arrested in Pula in August 2026, pending extradition to Germany. Another suspect, Serhii Kuznetsov, was arrested in Italy and extradited to Germany after Italian authorities approved his handover.

The sabotage has had a profound impact on Germany’s economy, prompting a overhaul of its energy exports and consumption. Claudia Kemfert, a professor at the Institute for Economic Research in Berlin, told Al Jazeera that the incident reinforced the lesson of Germany’s dependence on Russian fossil gas during the 2022 energy crisis. "The Nord Stream sabotage fundamentally changed the debate on energy security," she said. "Today, security means reducing fossil import dependence through diversification, renewables, efficiency, grids, and storage."

The pipelines, which were designed to deliver 110 billion cubic meters of natural gas per year, made Germany "captive to Russia," as United States President Donald Trump noted in 2022. Nord Stream 2, though never operational, contained pressurized gas at the time of the explosions, while Nord Stream 1, along with other Russian pipelines, provided 55 percent of Germany’s natural gas. The attack has led to a major expansion of infrastructure for liquefied natural gas, providing a silver lining in the wake of the disaster.

The alleged sabotage has also changed the energy security debate in Europe, emphasizing the importance of reducing dependence on imported fossil fuels. "The central lesson is clear: The less Germany depends on imported fossil fuels, the more resilient its economy and energy system become," Kemfert said.

Despite the passage of time, the unresolved questions surrounding the Nord Stream attack remain politically sensitive in Berlin-Kyiv relations. The arrests and upcoming trials of the suspects have highlighted the severity of the incident and its impact on Germany’s economy and energy policy. As the trial progresses, it will be interesting to see how this event will influence Germany’s foreign policy and its relations with both Ukraine and Russia.
