Sydney Marathon Under Fire as Israeli Soldiers Join Despite Protests

The 2026 Sydney Marathon has become a focal point of controversy as hundreds of demonstrators took to the streets to protest the participation of Israeli soldiers in the event. The Australian government's decision to issue visas to 40 Israeli soldiers, including some linked to the conflict in Gaza, has sparked widespread criticism and calls for accountability.

As the runners crossed the finish line, the atmosphere was marred by the chants of protesters demanding the exclusion of war criminals and the severing of ties with Israel. Pro-Palestine activists waved Palestinian flags and displayed posters that called for justice and an end to the occupation.

The Israeli delegation at the marathon was notably composed of members from the Israeli army's Golani Brigade and signal intelligence Unit 8200. The Golani Brigade, one of the most notorious units in the Israeli military, has been implicated in several controversial operations, including the deadly ambush of 15 paramedics and rescue workers in Gaza last year.

Roy Oryon, a member of the marathon delegation, served as a deputy company commander in the Golani Brigade's 13th Battalion, which has been at the forefront of Israel's military actions in Gaza and southern Lebanon.

The granting of visas to these soldiers has been met with significant backlash, with rights organizations and activists calling for an investigation and potential prosecution. The Boycott, Divest, Sanctions (BDS) movement, which seeks to end international support for Israel's oppression of Palestinians, emphasized the legal obligation of Australian authorities to act.

"We demand that Australia investigate and prosecute those suspected of committing genocide," the BDS movement stated, noting that every state is obliged to investigate and prosecute those suspected of such crimes.

Al Jazeera inquired whether the individuals in question were subject to extra security screening or character checks, as per Australia's Migration Act. However, a Department of Home Affairs spokesperson cited privacy reasons and declined to comment on individual cases.

The controversy surrounding the Israeli soldiers' participation in the Sydney Marathon comes at a time when tensions between Israel and Australia have been on the rise. Just days before the marathon, Israel refused to pursue a criminal investigation into the killing of Australian citizen Zomi Frankcom, who was killed alongside six colleagues in a drone strike on a World Central Kitchen convoy in Gaza.

The Australia Palestine Advocacy Network (APAN) has called for an urgent scrutiny of the reported Israeli participants and has demanded that the Australian Government and Australia Police Force take action before the event proceeds.

"APAN says Australia cannot claim to uphold international law while potentially allowing individuals suspected of involvement in serious international crimes, including plausible genocide, to enter the country without proper investigation," the organization stated.

The Sydney Marathon has thus become a microcosm of the broader international debate on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, highlighting the complexities and challenges faced by nations in navigating their foreign policies amidst such contentious issues.
