Royal Turmoil in Uganda as Late Monarch King Oyo Is Laid to Rest Amid Succession Clash

The kingdom of Tooro laid its monarch, King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, to rest on September 12 in the western Ugandan city of Fort Portal. Yet beneath the solemnity of the state funeral lay an intensifying battle over royal succession, dividing the royal household and threatening to disrupt centuries-old traditions of royal inheritance.

The burial ceremony took place at the sacred Karambi Royal Tombs, marking the conclusion of a nine-day official mourning period. The event coincided with Empango, the annual commemoration of King Oyo's ascension to the throne, adding poignant historical weight to an already tense gathering of traditional leaders, family members, and grieving subjects.

During the final rites, 56-year-old Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma, who serves as a news anchor and editor with the state-run Uganda Broadcasting Corporation, moved to consolidate his position as the newly appointed monarch. Kijanangoma carried out a crucial customary ritual by casting nine coffee berries into the open grave, an act signifying the formal assumption of sovereign authority under Tooro tradition.

However, Kijanangoma’s coronation pathway has met fierce resistance from the deceased king’s closest relatives. Queen Mother Best Kemigisa and Princess Ruth Komuntale have strongly contested the appointment, maintaining that the throne rightfully belongs to an heir designated directly by the late monarch before his passing.

The conflict has brought to light the existence of an undisclosed child. King Oyo never wed and had maintained a strictly private personal life with no publicly acknowledged offspring. Following his death, Tooro Prime Minister Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki revealed that the king had fathered a son whose identity remains undisclosed to the public until an appropriate moment.

According to the late king’s immediate family, a formal will drafted in 2022 explicitly named this child—identified in the document as King Oyo’s lawfully recognized biological son—as the rightful successor to the royal seat. The family insists that this written testament should serve as the definitive blueprint for the monarchy's continuity.

In contrast, traditional custodians within the Babiito clan have dismissed the validity of the document. As the hereditary protectors of the kingdom's customs and royal bloodline, clan elders assert that King Oyo never introduced the boy through mandatory cultural procedures, leaving the clan no choice but to endorse Prince Kijanangoma.

Clan elder Reverend Father Charles Oyo articulated the traditional leadership's stance, arguing that ancestral customs supersede individual declarations. He explained that a written will merely conveys personal desires rather than binding sovereign decisions, stressing that the authority of the Musuuga, the supreme leader of the Babiito clan, sits above any written document.

The clan’s position has provoked sharp indignation from Princess Komuntale, who publicly accused traditional leaders of staging an unlawful power grab. Defending her late brother's legacy, she characterized King Oyo as a gentle and humble ruler while denouncing the opposing faction as predatory figures attempting to usurp what the monarch had preserved.

The escalating dispute generated widespread friction across the kingdom, capturing national attention and prompting the Ugandan central government to step in. State officials engaged in high-level mediation efforts with both factions in an attempt to forge a resolution before the burial proceeded.

King Oyo’s path to leadership was historic from its inception. He ascended the throne in 1995 at the age of three following the unexpected death of his father, Patrick David Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III. The ascension earned him international recognition as the world's youngest reigning monarch, placing immense communal responsibilities on him from early childhood.

Growing up under the public gaze, the young king began his education inside the palace before entering primary school. Those who shared his early years recall his warmth, noting that he frequently slipped away from his family’s private home in Buziga, Kampala, to join local children in informal football matches.

Childhood friend and radio journalist Martin Odong remembered King Oyo as a compassionate and approachable companion. Odong recounted how the young ruler would voluntarily halt football games whenever an opponent was hurt to ensure their well-being, a lifelong affection for sports that later saw the king champion local athletics and the Tooro Kingdom MTN Masaza Cup.

The monarch's reign was cut short on August 27, when he succumbed to cancer at the age of 34 while undergoing specialized medical care in the United States. His passing prompted a wave of national mourning across Uganda, culminating in the memorial services held at St John’s Cathedral in Fort Portal prior to the interment.

Speaking at the cathedral service, Queen Mother Best Kemigisa reflected emotionally on her son's protective role in her life, recalling how she had once prayed for her own life to be taken instead of his during illness. Princess Komuntale and Father Charles Oyo also paid tribute to the late ruler's humor and dedication, lamenting that his life ended just as his mature leadership was beginning to shape the kingdom's modern era.
