Kennedy Center Board Votes to Shutter Historic Venue Following Court Defeat Over Trump Signage

The governing board of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts has voted to close the landmark venue indefinitely, pointing to an intensifying financial crisis and critical structural repair needs. The shutdown follows months of bitter legal clashes regarding attempts to place U.S. President Donald Trump’s name onto the national cultural institution.

The decision to close the facility came on Tuesday, only hours after a federal court thwarted the latest administration-backed effort to alter the building's exterior signage. The board of trustees, which is largely comprised of political allies appointed by the president, convened immediately in the wake of the judicial ruling to approve the closure.

U.S. District Judge Casey Cooper ruled on Tuesday that a newly proposed facade modification violated an existing court injunction that prohibited the trustees from renaming the facility. Under the rejected proposal, the board had sought to install lettering beneath the venue's existing signage reading that the center was “restored and renovated by President Donald J Trump.”

In a definitive ruling, Judge Cooper emphasized that altering the memorial’s identity exceeds the authority of the trustees. The judge wrote that the defendants cannot install memorials honoring Trump or any other individual or entity at the Kennedy Center without receiving explicit authorization from the United States Congress.

The legal defeat represents the latest roadblock for the board, which has repeatedly attempted to affix the president's moniker to the performing arts center in Washington, D.C. Trustees have continuously maintained that retaining Trump's name on the exterior is an indispensable requirement for securing the funds necessary to ensure the complex's survival.

Financial strains at the institution have mounted rapidly in recent weeks. A report published by The Washington Post on Monday revealed that the prominent performing arts organization had reached the brink of bankruptcy, with trustees warning that failure to integrate Trump’s name into the building's facade would result in certain fiscal collapse.

Following the board’s vote, Trump addressed the closure on social media, asserting that the trustees had decided to halt operations due to pressing safety concerns. The president also maintained that critical renovation work on the complex would not be allowed to proceed unless his name was officially incorporated into the physical structure.

Trump strongly condemned the federal court's decision, describing the historic performing arts center as being in an advanced state of deterioration that only he possessed the capacity to remediate. He claimed that the venue is in a virtual state of collapse and asserted that the board voted to rescue the building with the understanding that he holds unique fundraising and construction abilities.

The protracted controversy over the venue's branding began in December 2025, when Trump's name was initially mounted on the facade of the building. In May, Judge Cooper declared the addition unlawful and directed that the presidential lettering be dismantled. While the board eventually complied with the mandate, protective tarps and scaffolding have continued to obscure the affected section of the exterior.

The legal challenge against the renaming was spearheaded by Democratic Congresswoman Joyce Beatty, who serves as an ex officio member of the Kennedy Center board of trustees. Beatty's legal representation praised Tuesday's judicial outcome as an essential protection of former President John F. Kennedy’s legacy and the rule of law.

Attorneys Norm Eisen and Nathaniel Zelinsky, representing Beatty, issued a statement declaring that the courts have now twice affirmed that the president is not above the law. The legal team characterized the ruling as a triumph of judicial sanity over presidential vanity.

Beatty forcefully criticized the administration's actions, accusing Trump of holding the premier cultural venue hostage to personal ambition. She stressed that statutory law clearly dictates the complex is named solely in honor of President Kennedy, adding that the ongoing unlawful maneuvers regarding the building must come to an end.

Despite the courtroom setback, Trump indicated that the confrontation may not be over, alluding to potential executive measures that could be deployed to reshape the institution. He stated that the strength and authority of the presidency would be utilized to restore the venue to greatness after wasting more than half a year in litigation.

The sudden closure marks an unprecedented escalation in the power struggle between federal courts and the executive branch over the administration of one of the nation's most prominent arts complexes. Current and former trustees on the Kennedy Center's governing board did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the next steps for the shuttered institution.
