Jeremy Corbyn Condemns Israeli Travel Ban on British Lawmakers Following Settlement Sanctions

British Member of Parliament Jeremy Corbyn has strongly denounced the Israeli government’s decision to ban him and ten other UK parliamentarians from entering the country. The former Labour Party leader characterized the diplomatic measure as an attempt by authorities to deflect international accountability and prevent independent scrutiny of conditions in the occupied Palestinian territories.

The travel prohibition was instituted after the United Kingdom moved to place sanctions on goods originating from illegal Israeli settlements. Addressing the restriction, Corbyn stated that the barring of elected officials offers the international community a direct window into the daily authoritarian constraints routinely experienced by Palestinians living under military occupation.

Corbyn, who serves as the Member of Parliament for Islington North, insisted that the entry ban would not hinder his ongoing advocacy for Palestinian rights. He described the diplomatic retaliation as an increasingly desperate measure by the Israeli administration at a time when global public support is facing significant erosion.

According to the veteran lawmaker, the primary motivation behind the exclusion is to keep British politicians from directly visiting the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. By barring foreign officials, Corbyn argued, authorities hope to conceal the full reality of their administrative controls, military presence, and ongoing military operations from the wider world.

The dispute unfolds against the backdrop of significant international legal rulings. Corbyn highlighted a July 2024 judgment delivered by the International Court of Justice, which determined that Israel’s ongoing presence in the occupied Palestinian territories is unlawful. The ruling established clear international legal obligations, compelling nations, including the United Kingdom, to refrain from rendering aid or assistance that sustains the occupation.

While welcoming the British government's sanctions on settlement goods as an overdue measure, Corbyn argued that the policy should only serve as an initial baseline. He noted that because settlement commercial activities are deeply integrated into Israel’s broader national economy, effective legal compliance requires a more comprehensive cessation of all trade and support sustaining the unlawful presence.

Beyond commercial restrictions, the Islington North MP called on the British government to officially recognize the genocide in Gaza and fundamentally reassess its diplomatic and security ties. He maintained that continuing conventional relations contradicts the legal findings set forth by international bodies regarding the conflict.

A central element of Corbyn's demands is an immediate termination of all military cooperation between the UK and Israel. He specifically cited the export of components designated for F-35 combat aircraft, as well as the operation of surveillance flights over the Gaza Strip, arguing that such activities directly involve British resources in ongoing military operations.

To ensure accountability at home, the MP reiterated his persistent calls for a formal public inquiry into potential British complicity in the conflict. He asserted that UK authorities must face rigorous examination regarding their political, logistical, and military ties during the campaign in Gaza.

Corbyn drew attention to the acute humanitarian crisis unfolding across the Gaza Strip, pointing to a prolonged blockade that has caused widespread displacement and mass starvation among the civilian population. He noted that alongside parliamentarians, United Nations investigators and foreign correspondents have faced systematic entry refusals, obstructing efforts to document alleged war crimes.

Reflecting on his previous visits to the region over several decades, Corbyn detailed the extensive physical infrastructure of the occupation throughout the West Bank. He cited the widespread presence of manned watchtowers, military checkpoints, arbitrary arrests, and increasing violence by settlers against local residents as core elements of an apartheid system restricting basic freedom of movement.

The lawmaker also emphasized the enduring plight of thousands of Palestinian refugees who continue to be denied the right of return to their ancestral homes, identifying their unresolved status as a fundamental injustice at the heart of the decades-long crisis.

Despite the ban on his physical entry, Corbyn reaffirmed his commitment to the Palestinian solidarity movement, noting his frequent participation in major demonstrations across London. He pledged to consistently center the perspectives and daily lived experiences of Palestinians in his public speeches and parliamentary interventions.

Corbyn concluded that no diplomatic sanction or travel prohibition would succeed in silencing calls for justice. Emphasizing the cultural richness and resilience of the Palestinian people he has met throughout his career, he reiterated his determination to campaign for an end to the occupation and the realization of a free, independent Palestinian state.
