Iranian Missile Barrage Targets Key Jordanian Airbase Hosting American Forces

Tensions between Washington and Tehran have escalated further into regional airspace following a major Iranian missile attack directed at Jordan’s Al-Azraq airbase. The military installation, which accommodates United States service members and strategic aerial assets, became the primary focus of Iranian retaliatory fire amid an intensifying cycle of confrontation across the Middle East.

According to statements released by the Jordanian Armed Forces, the kingdom’s air defense systems successfully engaged a barrage of 20 ballistic missiles fired overnight on Tuesday and into Wednesday morning. Military officials confirmed that 18 incoming projectiles were intercepted and destroyed midair, while the remaining two landed in unpopulated desert areas, leaving no reported casualties or significant damage on the ground.

In Washington, an official from the Trump administration affirmed that the strike caused no casualties among stationed personnel. Speaking on condition of anonymity, the official characterized the Iranian missile barrage as ineffective, crediting the performance of integrated air and missile defense networks deployed in the region for neutralizing the threat.

Conversely, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps issued a contrasting narrative through the semi-official Tasnim news agency. The IRGC asserted that it had executed devastating strikes on the installation, officially known as the Muwaffaq Salti Air Base. Iranian military commanders claimed their ballistic missiles directly hit hangars, shelters, and deployment facilities housing advanced American fighter jets, including F-35, F-16, and F-15 aircraft.

The latest bombardment forms part of a broader, rapidly expanding conflict that has seen the United States and Iran trade punitive strikes in vital maritime corridors. Hostilities surged over recent days following reciprocal attacks on oil tankers operating in the Strait of Hormuz, with Tehran explicitly framing its strikes against the Jordanian facility as direct retaliation for American operations against Iranian maritime vessels.

This current phase of heightened warfare ignited two weeks earlier when American forces targeted rocket launcher positions situated on Iran’s Larak Island within the Strait of Hormuz. Washington asserted that the installations were being prepared to deploy sea mines across the shipping lane, prompting Tehran to initiate retaliatory strikes on American military positions across Gulf states before broadening its target parameters to encompass Jordanian territory.

The latest operation represents a continuation of recurrent strikes against the base. Iranian forces have claimed responsibility for attacking the Al-Azraq installation on more than ten separate occasions between March and September. The initial wave of direct aerial assaults against the facility commenced in early March as regional friction deepened.

Hostilities intensified noticeably on June 10, when Iran announced wide-ranging strikes against Al-Azraq alongside other military installations hosting American personnel in Kuwait and Bahrain. That wave of attacks came in the wake of US strikes on Iranian assets following the crash of an American Apache helicopter near Gulf waters. Although the IRGC claimed to have destroyed command centers and hangars, regional authorities reported that all incoming missiles were neutralized without casualties.

The confrontation at the facility reached a critical juncture on July 17, when an Iranian assault utilizing ballistic missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles resulted in confirmed American casualties. While Tehran reported extensive destruction of fighter jets and aerial refueling craft, US Central Command subsequently verified that two American service members were killed in action, one remained missing, and four others sustained injuries.

Situated approximately 100 kilometers northeast of Amman within the Zarqa governorate, the Muwaffaq Salti Air Base occupies a strategic location in Jordan’s Eastern Desert. The base carries the name of Lieutenant Muwaffaq Salti, a revered Jordanian fighter pilot who died in combat against Israeli forces during the Battle of Samu in 1966.

The facility's role as a major hub for Western operations was solidified under a 2021 defense cooperation agreement established between Amman and Washington. That bilateral pact formally granted United States military forces and affiliated defense contractors access to 12 designated military installations situated throughout the kingdom.

Jordan hosts a substantial American military footprint, maintaining nearly 4,000 stationed US soldiers, according to findings from a 2026 US Congressional Research Service report. In addition to personnel positioned at Al-Azraq, American troops are stationed at the King Faisal Air Base in southern Jordan, as well as Tower 22, a critical logistics outpost located near the country’s northeastern frontiers with Syria and Iraq.

The strategic prominence of the Al-Azraq facility stems largely from the advanced aerial hardware stationed within its fortified perimeter. Academic specialists note that the installation is among a limited number of regional bases equipped to support premier fifth-generation and advanced combat aircraft, including F-35s, F-16s, and F-22s.

According to Tahani Mustafa, an international relations lecturer at King’s College London’s Department of War Studies, the base provides extensive hangar infrastructure designed to shield and maintain critical American aerial assets. This high concentration of advanced aviation platforms and logistics facilities continues to make the desert base a persistent, high-priority target in Tehran’s broader retaliatory campaigns against the United States.
