Flydubai Flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv Diverted to Saudi Arabia After In-Flight Emergency and Pilot Attack

A Flydubai passenger jet traveling from Dubai to Tel Aviv was forced to divert to Saudi Arabia on Wednesday after an emergency unfolded on the flight deck, triggering a dramatic mid-air sequence of events that has drawn international attention and raised urgent questions about aviation security in the region.

The aircraft, operating as flight FZ1073, departed Dubai at approximately 03:05 local time and was crossing Jordanian airspace when the situation rapidly deteriorated. According to flight tracking data, the plane began experiencing altitude fluctuations at around 05:21, followed by a precipitous drop of more than 14,000 feet in under 30 seconds just one minute later — a rate of descent that aviation experts describe as consistent with a catastrophic loss of control.

The emergency escalated further when the aircraft's transponder signal shifted to code 7700, the universal designation for a general emergency, at approximately 05:31. Seven minutes later, the signal changed again to code 7500, which specifically declares "unlawful interference" — the international aviation code reserved for hijackings and similar security threats. The plane ultimately landed safely at Tabuk Regional Airport in Saudi Arabia at 06:45.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that one of the pilots had stabbed the other and then attempted to crash the aircraft. He characterized the incident as an attempted attack and said Israel was preparing for other potential threats in the aftermath. However, no official confirmation of a hijacking attempt has been issued by investigating authorities, and the precise cause of the incident remains under investigation.

Flydubai, the Dubai-based carrier, issued a statement confirming that an altercation had taken place on the flight deck. The airline emphasized that all passengers were safe and accounted for, and that the aircraft had been secured by on-duty crew members who were traveling onboard. The carrier did not elaborate on the nature of the altercation or identify the individuals involved.

Saudi officials at Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Tabuk reported that both the captain and the first officer sustained injuries and were hospitalized following the aircraft's arrival. The statement, carried by Saudi state-run Alekhbariya television, did not provide details on the severity of their conditions or the circumstances surrounding their injuries.

Video footage reportedly recorded onboard the aircraft appears to show the captain lying on the floor with multiple stab wounds, while a passenger is visible with a bloody head injury. Additional video circulating on social media shows passengers weeping and crying out in fear as the aircraft shook violently during the ordeal, underscoring the terror experienced by those onboard during the harrowing descent.

Yasmin Abukasis, the mother of a passenger named Miriam, described her daughter's belief that she was going to die during the incident. Speaking to journalists at Israel's Ben Gurion Airport, Abukasis recounted how the plane began to lose control before other pilots who happened to be onboard took command of the aircraft and stabilized the situation, ultimately guiding it to a safe landing in Saudi territory.

Passenger Dalia Shpigel provided a detailed account to the Israeli newspaper Haaretz, explaining that some passengers seated toward the front of the aircraft broke into the cockpit after realizing something was gravely wrong. She described how, approximately an hour before landing, passengers felt the plane was no longer under control and was beginning to "jump." When the aircraft entered its steep dive, those passengers forced their way into the cockpit.

Netanyahu later said he had spoken with one of the Israeli passengers who entered the cockpit and helped overpower one of the pilots who was reportedly attempting to sabotage the aircraft's systems. The prime minister praised these individuals for demonstrating what he called extraordinary resourcefulness and courage, crediting them with saving many lives and preventing what could have become a major disaster.

Israel's Defence Minister Israel Katz stated that preliminary information indicated the attacker intended to crash the plane with everyone onboard, describing the incident as an "attempted jihadist terror attack." An Israeli official, speaking to Reuters on condition of anonymity, identified the alleged attacker as a national of Oman. Omani authorities have not publicly commented on this claim.

The diplomatic dimension of the incident is particularly sensitive given the complex web of regional relationships. Israel does not maintain formal diplomatic relations with either Saudi Arabia or Oman, though it engages in occasional dialogue through informal channels. Oman has notably declined to join other regional nations in normalizing ties with Israel, citing Palestinian rights concerns. Saudi Arabia has similarly conditioned any normalization of relations on Israel's acceptance of a Palestinian state.

The incident occurs at an especially fraught moment in Israeli society and politics. The country is days away from marking the one-year anniversary of the Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, which killed approximately 1,200 people and triggered a devastating war in Gaza. According to the source, that conflict has killed more than 75,000 Palestinians — mostly women and children — including approximately 1,400 deaths since a US-brokered ceasefire supposedly took effect in October 2025.

In the political arena, opposition leader Yair Lapid claimed that Netanyahu's political allies had attempted to exploit the incident as the fulfillment of warnings issued a day earlier about a possible attack on Israel ahead of legislative elections scheduled for October 27. Lapid asserted on social media that the warning about activity abroad was specific, had been in place for more than two years, and had nothing to do with planes or anything resembling what occurred that morning. He accused Netanyahu of trying to attach himself to the heroism of the passengers for political gain.

Meanwhile, a second Flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv, designated FZ1081, was erroneously reported in Hebrew media to have turned around. The Times of Israel reported that the mistake appeared to stem from a glitch on flight-tracking websites. That aircraft did not issue any emergency signal and continued its journey to Tel Aviv without disruption, according to the report.

The United Arab Emirates has become a popular vacation destination for Israeli tourists since the two countries normalized diplomatic ties in 2020. The direct air route between Dubai and Tel Aviv has become a symbol of that relationship, making Wednesday's incident particularly significant for bilateral relations and regional aviation security. Authorities in multiple countries are now expected to examine what security protocols were followed and whether existing measures are adequate to prevent similar incidents on commercial flights.
