Clearlake Capital Secures Full Control of Chelsea as Todd Boehly Departs and Xabi Alonso Backs New Era

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has voiced strong confidence in the football club's forward trajectory following a major boardroom restructuring that saw private equity firm Clearlake Capital assume full operational control, bringing Todd Boehly’s tenure as chairman to a definitive conclusion.

The London outfit officially confirmed the high-stakes ownership transition late on Wednesday, announcing that Clearlake, co-founded by Behdad Eghbali and Jose E. Feliciano, agreed to buy out the equity held by Boehly and club director Mark Walter. The transaction resolves the shared governance arrangement that had defined the team's executive leadership over recent years.

Under the initial multi-party consortium established in May 2022 to acquire Chelsea from Roman Abramovich following a British government-mandated sale, Clearlake maintained a controlling 61.5 percent stake. The remaining shares were distributed among American billionaires Boehly and Walter, alongside Swiss investor Hansjorg Wyss.

Following the latest agreement, Wyss will not be departing Stamford Bridge. The club affirmed in its official communications that the Swiss billionaire is set to remain an important stakeholder and continuing partner within the newly consolidated ownership structure.

Financially, the transaction represents a monumental deal within European football. Boehly and Walter are slated to pocket £950 million, equivalent to roughly $1.27 billion, for their combined holdings, a valuation benchmark that pegs the aggregate enterprise value of Chelsea at approximately £5 billion, including its existing debt load.

Beyond their football investments, both Boehly and Walter maintain extensive portfolios in elite sports, retaining co-ownership stakes in Major League Baseball's Los Angeles Dodgers. Walter also recently concluded a massive commercial deal in North American basketball, offloading the Los Angeles Lakers franchise for $12.5 billion.

The buyout extends beyond English borders to the multi-club network established under the previous leadership. As part of the restructuring, Boehly and Walter have simultaneously divested their equity in French Ligue 1 side RC Strasbourg, granting Clearlake sole governance over the partner outfit across the English Channel.

Addressing the sudden boardroom shift on Thursday, Chelsea released a formal statement outlining its vision for the future, declaring that the collective focus remains set on competing at football's highest level, capturing major domestic and European trophies, and establishing sustained long-term success.

Speaking ahead of Friday's Premier League fixture against Brentford, Alonso described the ownership consolidation as an important day for the institution. The Spanish manager, who formally took the reins at Stamford Bridge on July 1, took time to acknowledge the contributions of the outgoing figures while welcoming the organizational clarity.

Alonso expressed gratitude toward Boehly and Walter for laying the groundwork during their time at the helm, conceding that while he was not present during their initial period in charge, he recognized the foundational role they played in managing the transition following the 2022 sale.

However, the former Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen manager emphasized that having a single, defined decision-maker provides immense structural stability. He noted that with Eghbali exercising decisive authority at the summit, the internal hierarchy and direction of the club are now transparent and unambiguous.

Detailing his personal connection with Eghbali, Alonso revealed that the Clearlake co-founder had traveled directly to Madrid to present the sporting project and convince him to take the managerial post. Alonso stressed that the two have established an exceptional working relationship and share an aligned vision for the squad.

The manager acknowledged that building a consistent, championship-caliber team requires patience and time, but he maintained that the overall ambition within the camp is completely evident to all staff and players involved in the daily operations.

The managerial change and boardroom buyout follow a turbulent sporting cycle since the May 2022 takeover. Chelsea’s peak domestic campaign during that span came with a fourth-place Premier League finish in the 2024/25 season, an outing paired with international silverware in the UEFA Conference League and the FIFA Club World Cup.

Despite those cup triumphs, the squad suffered a steep decline in form during the subsequent campaign, slumping to a disappointing 10th-place finish in the Premier League. Alonso was subsequently recruited over the summer with an explicit remit to revitalize the underperforming squad and restore Chelsea to title contention.

The Blues have experienced a balanced start under Alonso's guidance in the current league season, accumulating seven points from their opening four matches to occupy sixth place in the Premier League table as they prepare for their upcoming London derby.
